Planning your trip to Mesa Verde National Park requires checking the calendar. Tours stop running during the winter months. You must time your visit between spring and fall. Here is when you should plan to go.

When is the best time to visit Cliff Palace?

September is the ideal month to take the tour.

Visiting in September gives you pleasant weather at the site's 7,000-foot elevation. You will also experience slightly smaller crowds than during the peak summer months. Early May is another strong option. Always pack layered clothing for unpredictable mountain temperatures.

Are Cliff Palace tours open year-round?

No, tours are closed from late October through April.

Mesa Verde National Park remains open in winter. However, the ranger-guided Cliff Palace tour does not operate then. The tour season runs strictly from early May to late October. During the winter, you can only view the dwelling from the Driving Loop Stops.

How early should I book my tour tickets?

You must reserve tickets exactly 14 days before your desired tour date.

Tickets cost $8.00 per person. They go on sale at 8:00 am MDT on Recreation.gov. Because the tour is popular, spots sell out fast. Plan to be online right when the 14-day window opens.
